Are you looking at upgrading from your traditional composter? I must say it’s an excellent idea. The traditional bins send out an invitation to numerous fleas, critters, best and animals. Apart from that having a shabby-looking bin in your backyard that is infested with flies and releases of foul odor is very putting off. I mean that’s the last thing that I would want my guest to see especially, if you’re hosting them or having a little barbecue. For years our team has researched various composers, and we have seen some really good ones that are excellent for your daily composting requirements. So, if you’re a newcomer or a seasoned composter looking for a change or upgrade, you have stopped by the right place. Today we will discuss all about the various compact compost tumblers that are available in the market.
Compost tumblers
They’re the kind of container that holds all your household and yard compostable waste, allowing you to turn the composter easily. When you look at, it looks like a plastic barrel. These barrels are excellent at maturing compost quicker because, it allows you to mix and turn your compost frequently. They are made specially to make the entire mixing process simple. You no longer need to get your hands messed up by digging into the compost. I look at it more as a hygienic way to compost.
The science behind a compact compost tumbler
If you have a compost heap, you would notice that the entire process is very slow. This is only because the microbes that are present in your composting pile do not receive sufficient air. Now, these tumblers allow you to turn and make your compostable materials easily. When you do so, you introduce air into the pile, heating it. This leads to the compost maturing quicker. This is the science behind utilizing a compost tumbler.
I’m sure you guys are already aware that your compost pile needs to have a balanced mix of carbon and nitrogen. This means that the browns and the greens must be balanced. But your task doesn’t end here, they should also be mixed well in order to receive rich compost. Browns require more work to be done in comparison to the greens and mixing gets the job done faster.
Compost pile vs compost tumbler
A team ran a couple of tests to try and compare a regular compost pile to a compost tumbler and the results were phenomenal.
In the first test, we had a compost pile and compostable materials in a tumbler. The compost pile was not mixed often however, the tumbler was turned frequently. In a span of 10 weeks, we received nutrient-rich compost from the tumbler, while the piles still had certain materials that were undone.
In the second test, we had a compost pile and a compost tumbler. Both were mixed frequently, at the same time. And what do you know, 10 weeks later we get nutrient-rich compost from the compost pile and the tumbler.
This means that if you make a compost pile frequently, just as you would with a tumbler the results will be the same. However, having a compost tumbler makes mixing very easy. I also feel it keeps all your compostable materials tightly tucked in and it’s a more hygienic way of composting. So that’s all for now, I do hope our tests will give you more insights and make a choice according to your requirements. Happy composting!
