Where do you plan to place your compost bin? Well, traditionally compost cans are hidden in a corner of the yard. But I always believe that a compost bucket should be accessible easily, however it’s safer to not keep it in a spot where sometimes leaching liquids and smells tend to create a nuisance. I prefer to place my bin in a place that is leveled and the ground is well-drained and above all, it should get a certain amount of sunlight. Always remember if your compost does not receive heat the entire process of composting will decrease. So always remember to wisely choose a site because it will definitely make a big difference. The location must match your requirements however you must also assist the bin to work efficiently. It makes no sense of investing all your time and energy in setting up you’re been in a sort of place only to find out later that you are facing concerns. So, in order to assist you in selecting the ideal place for the compost can, I have made a list of certain things that you could consider.

Placing the compost bin

This is definitely something to consider, the distance from your compost bin to the kitchen. During the rains, I have specifically notice that my indoor composting tends to keep growing, so I tried to make it a point to place my bin in such a place that I am motivated to grab my boots and make my trip to the main composter. So, you may think placing the compost bin right outside the kitchen is the best place however; there is something that you must consider, what will happen when the compost loses its balance and begins to smell? I agree this is fixable but do you think that having a pile of smelly composed next to your kitchen is a good idea?

Adequate heat

This is indeed a major challenge in the winter, and the moment the compose does not receive adequate heat the entire process slows down so you must look for a place in your backyard where the sun rays will touch the compost bin keeping it warm even during the winter. You must also make sure that you’re composed is warm and not hot, because overheating off the bin may ruin your balance in the compost.

In addition to this, you must also be sure to not place your compost bin in places like,

  • A windy site
  • Under the tree
  • Close to the entrance of your home
  • Against the walls of your home
  • Away from the neighbor’s fence

By following the above tips I’m sure you would find an ideal location for your compost bin. So, wherever you choose to place your bin make sure it is convenient and makes your everyday composting experience easy and pleasurable. By doing so you will be able to convert all your garden and kitchen waste into the nutrient-rich composed for your garden. Happy composting!
