Healthy & attractive plants can be grown anywhere may it be a garden, a big landscape or your mere apartment space is never a constraint. Even if you stay in an urban area, you can start your vegetable garden right in your apartments. Besides flowers you can also plant your daily vegetables, herbs and also few fruits.
As I already said space is never an issue but there are few things to be considered before giving it a start. Plants needs sunlight and water hence a sunny space is required where you can easily water them. Normally in apartments you may use stands or steps for keeping your containers or pots hence its better to determine the size and weight of your containers as well. It is hence advised to assess the location considering all requisites. The most difficult part of anything is to get started, so just shoot but I would suggest a small start, this will help you understand the issues that may arise. A small start will help in analyzing and solving issues in the most effective manner which will increase your efficiency and know-how for handling a considerably big garden. You need to attend the plants sincerely and help them grow healthy though its not as complicated but it needs a considerate approach. We will discuss the requisites here:
Plants prepare food in presence of sunlight and water hence they need a direct supply of sunlight for around 6 to 7 hours daily. In urban areas we normally have high rise and tall structures which obstruct the sunlight to a great extent. Still there can be sunlight on our terraces, windowsills or balconies for a considerable time of the day which we can use for our gardening. If we can harvest the available sunlight for growing herbs and salad greens they will surely thrive as they grow well in small spaces with less sunlight.
Soil provides water and nutrients to the plant through its roots hence it is important to keep the soil well aerated. We use containers to grow plants in appartments, these containers contains limited soil hence the supply of nutrients will also be limited. Garden soil will get compact in these containers thereby making it difficult for the plant roots to breathe hence container plants should be nourished with a well balanced potting mix. Potting mix is lighter and fluffy this helps keep the containers light and the roots well aerated. A plant thrives and becomes healthy due to such balanced soil this increases its immunity and helps keep diseases away. Water also retains in such soil hence watering too is reduced considerably.
Normally container pots need more water hence while considering the space it is important to recognize a spot where availability of water is easy. Water cans are heavy hence carrying them to the terrace or the plants each time would be tedious and demotivating. Alternate sources of watering like a tap hose may be considered as they are easy to handle and convenient to use.
Indoor plants need humidity while they are under the sun or any artificial light source. You can easily overcome this by spraying fine mist or placing a water tray nearby.
If your apartment is on a higher floor or by a busy road then your plants are at threat due to the excessive wind. This can damage your plants or their leaves hence using a wind block and wide containers would be of good use.
Containers get heavy with soil, their weight increases while watering hence it is important to check and secure the window grills. Local restrictions and objections should also be considered while keeping containers on terraces or balconies.
