But it is very important to learn the kind of plant you have and its requirements before adding compost.
Alright so, let’s look at a couple of steps that you can follow in order to successfully add compose to the container plants, check it out.
Mixing compost two container garden
As discussed earlier, initially you can add compost to the soil prior to planting your plant. Maybe you got the soil from your local garden shop or you have prepared it all by yourself. Both will do well.
Spread a plastic sheet or newspaper on the floor. You can also utilize the wheelbarrow.
Pour out the potting mix on the surface depending on the amount required for the container plant. Now you can add 50% potting soil and 25% with compost. Mix it all up well.
Make sure to add little water as you prepare the compost and soil mixture. Make sure to keep it moist and not soggy.
This mixture can now be placed in the container and you can start growing your plants.
I agree that compost can get a tad expensive however; if you’re planning to save up on that, then you can follow the below procedure;
Add the soil into the container. In the center make a hole where you plan to grow your plant. Add a few inches off rich compost into the hole, now place your plant over the compost. In this way, you do not have to mix a lot of compost but, a little will do.
Adding compost to the top of the soil
Compost that you add to the potting soil offers beneficial organisms and nutrients to your plants. However, these nutrients last for six weeks. This is because most of it is consumed however; some of it is washed away with the watering.
In my experience, I always suggest to add compost once a month to your containers from the moment the plants begin to grow. It aids the plant to receive consistent nutrients. Suppose you have a mulch to the soil, be sure two move it prior to adding compost.
Avoid digging the soil while adding the compost bin, because there is a risk that the roots could get damaged along with organisms. When you add compost to the surface of your container soil, it does not disturb the activities in the soil. As soon as you water the plants all the nutrients will get deep into the soil.
Well, this is the best way that you can add compost to your container garden. Do let us know how it works out for you. All the best!
